The US national average regular gasoline price is $4.07 per gallon, 1.4 cents down on the week. EIA surveys 9 states individually: of those, Texas is cheapest at $3.58 and California dearest at $5.52. Across the federal districts, Gulf Coast (PADD 3) is cheapest at $3.62 and West Coast (PADD 5) dearest at $5.21. Every figure on this site is the EIA weekly retail price, and every state without its own survey series says which district figure it is showing.

What a federal survey can and cannot tell you about your state
Every price on this site is the EIA weekly retail price. [EIA · 31 Aug 2026] That buys you an audited, public-domain, primary figure. It also imposes a limit worth being blunt about.
- EIA collects prices from its retail panel on Monday morning and publishes the same afternoon ET.
- It publishes a weekly retail gasoline series for the United States, five PADDs, three PADD 1 sub-districts, West Coast less California, ten metro areas and 9 individual states: CA, CO, FL, MA, MN, NY, OH, TX, WA.
- It publishes no weekly retail price at all for the remaining 42 jurisdictions. Their pages here carry the district figure, labelled as regional, with the series id shown.
- Diesel is narrower still: EIA prices California and the regions, nothing else.

By PADD region
The EIA splits the US into five Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts. Each district has its own crude supply, refining base, and pricing personality.
PADD 1 - East Coast

PADD 3 - Gulf Coast

Cheapest and dearest in the survey week
Of the 9 states EIA prices individually, the cheapest gallon is in Texas at $3.58 and the dearest in California at $5.52. The cheapest and dearest federal districts are Gulf Coast (PADD 3) at $3.618 and West Coast (PADD 5) at $5.206.
